November 24, 2022 marked the official opening of the German Christmas Market in Quebec City, which has grown over the past 15 years to become an integral part of the Christmas Season in Quebec’s historic Old Town. On this occasion, the State of Bavaria Montreal Office, together with the German Consulate General, hosted a reception for its Quebec partners.

Until December 23, the old town of Quebec City will once again shine in the splendor of the German Christmas Market. At five locations, 90 booths with local handicrafts will welcome visitors from Thursday to Sunday.

The heart of the German Christmas Market, located in previous years at Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, has been relocated this year just steps from the legendary Château Frontenac, near the Samuel de Champlain statue. Also present this year are the typical decorative elements of the market, such as the Advent wreath, the illuminated Christmas pyramid and, of course, the wooden shacks offering tasty snacks and handmade products. In addition, other sites of the Christmas market are Place d’Armes, Place D’Youville, the Jardin de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, and the historic Sainte-Anne Street.

“The anniversary edition of the German Christmas Market in Quebec City will be by far the most festive and magical we have ever offered,” emphasizes Britta Kroeger, president of the market. “The Christmas Market will not only transform the old town of Quebec into a true winter wonderland, but will also surprise visitors with spectacular novelties and a rich entertainment program that will enchant young and old alike!”

The State of Bavaria Montreal Office is once again pleased to be part of this holiday season highlight in Quebec City by inviting, among others, the Bavarian music trio “Extrawurst” to perform several traditional folklore pieces at the “Alpenbar” booth on Place d’Youville on December 1 at 6 pm. In addition, the installation of the Munich Glockenspiel on the façade of the Le Diamant Theater will come to life again this year, adding a particularly Bavarian atmosphere to the stands of the German Christmas Market.

Since 2008, the German Christmas Market in Quebec has become one of the largest Christmas markets in North America. With its 2021 edition, it gained increasing popularity and achieved phenomenal success with around 750,000 visitors. The German Christmas Market has a strong economic impact on the Quebec region.
